Carrier oils are mainly used to dilute your essential oils prior any topical application. But they can also be used on their own.
When it comes to choose wisely your carrier oil you need to consider 3 elements:
#1 Odour - Most carrier oils have a light and natural aroma, however a few of them have a stronger and beautiful noticeable scent.

Apricot Kernel |
Coconut |
Jojoba |
Sweet Almond |
Argan |
Rosehip |
#2 Absorption - Carrier oils may have a different absorption rate regarding the type of your skin. To choose the one which is best for you, consider your skin type and what you would use it for.
Here is a chart to help you:
Absorption rate |
Carrier oil |
Slow |
Coconut |
Average |
Argan, Rosehip |
Fast |
Sweet Almond, Apricot, Jojoba |
For example, as an everyday face oil, we would recommend Apricot Kernel because it is a light and non greasy oil. However, as a massage oil, we like using Coconut, Argan or Sweet Almond, for their sweet scent and also more oily texture.
#3 Skin type - Some carrier oils may possess properties that are good for your skin type and some might not.
Here is a summary to help you choose:
Skin Type |
Carrier oil |
Normal |
Sweet Almond, Coconut |
Oily |
Australian Jojoba |
Dry |
Argan, Coconut |
Sensitive |
Apricot Kernel, Sweet Almond |
Mature |
Rosehip, Argan, Sweet Almond, Apricot Kernel |
For example, if your skin has breakout we would recommend you to use on your face Australian Jojoba. However, if you want to prevent your skin from ageing or treat scars, Argan and Rosehip are the best.
